Wolfy was a Royal Marines veteran who took his own life on 6th July 2019 after years of battling his demons. Words will never be able to express our sense of loss, we can now only take some small comfort from knowing that this kind, loving, complicated, beautiful man is now finally at peace.

Daniel "Danny / DJ" James Johnston
February 17, 1983 -
May 23, 2018
Danny started his military journey in January 2000 when he went to Harrogate Army Foundation College, joining his regiment The Princess of Wales Royal Regiment after passing out. He saw service in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and N.I and gaining his corporal stripes before completing selection for the Special Reconnaissance Regiment in 2009. We first noticed a change in him after his 2nd overseas tour when home on leave. He could not sleep and there were uncharacteristic bursts of aggression though he carried on being a popular, funny and sociable friend to his many acquaintances, who he always kept in touch with when home on leave. He was always itching to get back to the action and the army truly was his life. Due to his sleep problems he started self-medicating with alcohol and sleeping pills while on leave which eventually saw him being discharged late in 2013….this destroyed him! He worked in security and travelled the world after leaving but continued to try and re-enlist for several years until he was told he would never be accepted back into the military. We begged him to get professional help for his sleep and drink problems but he was adamant he could not have anything on his medical records that would jeopardise his career and over time his mental health deteriorated until he could take no more. Danny went missing on the 20th May 2018 and his body was found in a lonely wood a few miles from his home on the 23rd. A light went out of our lives that day. He lived for the army but it also destroyed him….had he been able to get help whilst in the army and after, things may have been very different. Danny was greatly loved by his family and a huge circle of friends and ex colleagues and our lives are poorer for having lost him. We miss you Danny.

Dave "Jukesy" Jukes
January 22, 1969 - October 9, 2018
Dave had severe, chronic service attributed PTSD Disorder. He struggled for many years with his mental health and was first diagnosed in 2006, where he was sectioned under the mental health act by the Police and mental health service. This led to his diagnosis of service attributed PTSD. He learnt to manage his symptoms on a day-to-day level following therapy. However, he couldn’t let go of his love for the military life and if you had ever asked him if he regretted anything he had done and the places he had been, he would say no- it was his identify and what he loved doing. It was his safe place, the place where he knew what was expected of him. It was civilian life that he didn’t like, this was the place where he didn’t quite understand the rules of social engagements and where a whole wealth of attributes he didn’t posses were expected. He went back to Afghanistan in 2012, and this saw his PTSD symptoms start to become unmanageable again. He took a while to recognise it in himself at first, but over time he did realise that he needed to reach out. Dave was quite intuitive where it came to verbalising his symptoms and his difficulties and although reluctant to open that Pandora’s Box again, he did engage with help. He saw every major, military mental health charity for assessments and therapy. Eventually he ended up under the care of the NHS TIL and CTS Programme, but it was almost too late as he went into a mental health crisis not long afterwards. He was put under the care of the local crisis management team and 3 months later completed suicide. Dave was the most honest, caring, loyal and dedicated husband, father and friend you would ever hope to meet and his presence in our lives is missed on a daily basis.
